Lost on the Highway of Life

“We need to turn around Mom! We were supposed to take that turnoff.” Turning around once would have been fine but the fifth time was ridiculous.

My daughter and I were in Dallas and attempting to drive to the Dallas Cowboy stadium from our hotel. She had looked up directions on her iPhone and we were off on the great adventure.  Letting her navigate while I drove was fine until……

·       I had to turn around the third time – and I was frustrated!
·       When I had to turn around the fourth time – I was ticked!
·       But when I turned around the fifth time – I went ballistic!
Pulling over I blurted out, “How can we be so lost? This is crazy!”
Only then did she tell me that her phone didn’t give exact directions. Dallas has numerous toll roads and because we were in a rental car we had to avoid them. Yet her phone didn’t have the option of circumventing the toll roads.
“You mean to tell me, you thought we would SOMEHOW find it without directions?” I exclaimed. “That is insane!” Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.
Finally, we made changes. We used a different phone map then found the stadium. Stopping for lunch after we oohed and awed at the stadium, she commented that I had become quiet. I smiled because I had gone into picture story mode. I responded to her that what we just experienced was a great example of what people do in life.
People start heading in a certain direction with no map and wander down the highway of life – never reaching where they were headed because they had no destination. They float through life without roots, purpose or goals. And then get to the end and wonder why it was so empty and meaningless.

It reminds me of Zig Ziglar’s statement, “Aim at nothing and you will hit it every time”.
Do you want a different outcome in life?
1.     Grow roots.
Go deeper instead of being superficial. Nurture friendships. Cultivate long lasting relationships.

2.     Find your purpose.
What are you passionate about? What gives you satisfaction and fills you with joy? That is where you will likely find your purpose. Then go for it! Aim to fulfill your purpose.
3.     Set goals.
Start with little goals. Check them off as you go. Goals such as:  Pay off a bill, start a savings account, call a friend each week, read your Bible every day,  take a class, go to church. What do you need to do to work towards your purpose?
Start today. Don’t let your life fly by and have nothing to show for it.
As Ecclesiastes 3:11 & 12 says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has put thoughts of the forever in man’s mind, yet man cannot understand the work God has done from the beginning to the end.  I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and to do good as long as they live.
Get out there and do good – for you and others.
