What I Don’t Know Can’t Hurt Me

WHAT I DON’T KNOW CAN’T HURT ME………
My favorite statement whenever I hear my adult children or their friend’s reminiscence about situations in their lives. Circumstances that cause me to shudder and think where was I? What kind of parent was I if these things were going on right under my nose and I had no clue?
Finding pictures of hilarious events that even took place in my house! Even worse is laughing with them as they show me a humorous picture and while I laugh, they wait for me to recognize where the picture was taken – my house.
Is the statement true – that what I don’t know can’t hurt me?
If someone is talking about me, scary things are happening in the neighborhood, or my teenagers are acting ridiculous, yes it is much easier for me to not know because:
·         I won’t feel out of place around those talking about me.
·         I won’t live in fear of my neighborhood.
·         I won’t be defensive because you think my teenager is a fool.
This morning this phrase boomeranged back into my mind. My adult son (who still acts like that foolish teenager) calls for me to come here. My response was why do I have to come there, you come here. No, he hollers, I have something to show you.
Standing in front of the bathroom sink he shows me an insect ready to go down the drain. My response is……Big deal, rinse it down the drain, so we have insects in the house! No, he says, LOOK AT IT.
I am looking at a spider which I despise and still don’t comprehend. Glaring at him and thinking…… you had me walk all the way in here just to look at a silly spider? I have only had one cup of coffee, you invaded my quiet time, and we are having a stare down in the bathroom, what is with you?
Mom! I just picked up that hairbrush that happened to be in the sink and that spider fell out of it. Look at that spider…..it is a brown recluse. Gulp.
Ephesians 5:15 says, “Be very careful, then how you live – not as unwise but as wise…..”
My favored phrase crumbled. Yes, what I don’t know CAN hurt me.
It’s time to be wise and call pest control…………….
